Travel Tips to Bangkok

Before you go | 去之前

Flights/Hotel Accommodation
I’m pretty sure y’all know what you’re doing in this department; just check out either Agoda (I go on this all the time), Expedia, Trivago, Hotels.com, and the likes (if you have any other recommended hotel/airline websites, do share in the comments!).

Airlines-wise, I’d like to introduce you to Emirates. I fly to/from BKK-HKG on Emirates ALL THE TIME. It may not be the cheapest one out there, but I find it really worth the value (or “dai” () as Hong Kongers would say) because it’s an A380, it’s got 30KG luggage allowance, the food is nice, in-flight entertainment is awesome (free movie! and the movies are usually really new). All of this for only about HKD 1600 (during promotion period, and trust me, they have promotions all the time, you can sign-up for their newsletter to always know when they have it).

I was talking to one of my colleagues who also went to Bangkok and I found out he’s never known that this flight exists. So, I thought it was worth a mention.

Phone Card
If my sources (aka. my parents living in Bangkok) are right, getting a sim card in Thailand is not as easy as it used to be. They require you to show your ID card/passport etc. etc.. So, if you're reading this from Hong Kong, I highly suggest you make your way to Ap Liu Street, Sham Shui Po, and get one there. The price should be about HK$50 (psst, it's even cheaper than in Thailand).

Weather

I would say because Hong Kong and Thailand are actually not too far away from each other, the weather won’t be too different. For example, if it is raining to Hong Kong, chances are it’s also raining in Bangkok. However, if you’d like it get a more specific and accurate forecast of the weather, the easiest way is to search “weather in Bangkok” on Google.

When you arrive | 已到了

Getting to your hotel

I highly recommend taking the good ol’ taxis. It’s cheap and convenient.
There’s a taxi station outside of the arrival hall (just follow the signs), where an airport staff will be around to help you talk to the taxi driver.

Currency exchange

Getting around |

BTS Skytrain (Recommended)

Taxi
Like rainbows on the congested roads of Bangkok.
Ideal when there’s no traffic.
Tip: ALWAYS ASK THE DRIVER TO START THE METER. If he/she refuses, get off and hail another one. There’s plenty.

Tuk-Tuk (read as 'took-took')
Not the most cost-effective or comfortable ride, but you should try it once, just for the experience. :)

Motorcycle

Again, just for the experience. But I have to warn you that your safety is not guaranteed.
